What is dermaroller
Dermaroller is a device with lots of small fine needles on its surface and a handle on the other side. The length of the needles ranges from 0.25mm to 1.5mm. The length of the needle depends upon the usage. We recommend you to use 0.25mm as a beginner.
Are you afraid of needles? Don’t worry this isn’t as scary as it seems at first. Once you start using it you will easily get used to it and love the benefits of derma rolling.
Before dermarollers were used to treat scars by the dermatologist and due to its effectiveness it has gained popularity and has a wide variety of use. Now anyone can use dermaroller with some basic knowledge at their own home.
Dermarollers can not only be used for the skin but also for hair. All you have to do is roll the derma roller on the surface of your skin gently. Now that we know what derma roller is, let’s understand what is derma rolling.
What is derma rolling and how does dermaroller work
Derma rolling is a process in which the fine needles are rolled gently over the skin which creates microscopic holes on the skin. The main goal is to puncture the skin so that the body responds to it and start its wound healing process. This way, the blood circulation speeds up on that area and the skin starts to produce more collagen.
Collagen is the protein that occurs throughout the body especially in the skin, bones and tissues. The new blood vessels provide nutrition to your skin eventually improving the health of your skin, making it smoother and firmer.
Dermarolling is similar to micro-needling, it’s just that you can use derma roller simply at your own home and by your own.
Not sure of what dermaroller size should you choose? Let us help you.
First, you have to choose the correct size of the needle. Choose the size according to the table given below.
Perfect needle size
|Acne scars||0.5 – 1.0 mm|
|Blemishes||0.25 – 0.5 mm|
|Uneven skin tone||0.25 mm|
|Stretch marks||1.0 – 1.5 mm|
|Wrinkles||0.5 – 1.0 mm|
No need to go beyond 1.5 mm as for home use you need to stay on the safer side. Larger needles are used by the professionals so for home use you can consider the size according to the above table.
How to use dermaroller properly
Follow this step by step guide to use dermaroller properly.
Step 1 : Wash your face before derma rolling
Wash your face with a gentle cleaner and let it dry naturally. Then apply 70 per cent isopropyl alcohol on your skin by dabbing a cotton ball on the solution and gently wipe it on your skin.
70 % isopropyl alcohol acts as a disinfectant which kills all microorganisms which may be present on your skin’s surface. It’s usually a good habit to wipe your skin with it before derma rolling.
Step 2: Apply numbing cream
It’s good practice to apply some numbing cream before rolling however it’s not mandatory if you are using derma roller with a small needle. But if you are using a needle with a length between 1.0 – 1.5 mm then apply a numbing cream
Step 3: Disinfect your dermaroller with 70 % isopropyl alcohol
Disinfect your derma roller by soaking in 70 % isopropyl alcohol for 8 to 10 minutes. There may be germs present on the surface so disinfecting it before using it is highly recommended for your safety.
Step 4: Roll it!
Don’t just roll it randomly! First, Divide your face into four sections i.e. forehead, left cheek, right cheek and chin.
Avoid rolling near your eye.
Start by gently rolling in one direction for 5-7 times, then lift the roller and roll again in another direction. You can roll in upward, downward, left and right directions. Don’t overdo it as it may cause marks on your skin.
If you feel any irritation then stop it!
Roll it the same way to every section of your face. You will notice an increase in blood flow on your face and a small amount of blood in some area which is perfectly normal.
Step 5: Wash your face with water and disinfect the dermaroller
Rinse your face with water and also disinfect the derma roller with 70% isopropyl alcohol and keep it somewhere safe.
As a beginner, you can start by using dermaroller with 0.25 mm. Use it every other day and as you progress you can change the needle size and frequency of use.
Now, you know what derma roller is and how to use it properly let us look at the benefits that you will get from derma rolling.
What are the benefits of derma rolling
1. Reduces wrinkles and fine lines
Usually, your body produces collagen regularly but it slows down with age. Derma roller helps stimulate collagen which results in new cell generation. Production of new cell increases which makes your skin tight and you look younger.
If you have any signs of ageing start using the dermaroller. It will surely reduce your wrinkles and fine lines.
In a recent study done by PubMed Central, derma roller has shown to increase the overall youthful appearance of the skin by reducing fine lines and wrinkles. It activates the body’s natural healing mechanism and increases the flow of blood.
Blood carries the nutrients which make your skin healthy and well nourished. The more new cells you have the younger you look.
2. Help shrink pores
Derma rolling can significantly reduce the size of the pores by increasing the collagen production around the pores. Collagen provides structure and promotes the elasticity of his skin.
By using derma roller you create a tiny invisible puncture in the top layer of your skin which stimulates your body’s natural healing mechanism which in turn help reduce pores.
3. Reduces scars
Derma roller with needle size 1.0 mm can be used to reduce the appearance of the scars. These scars could occur beneath the skin so if your skin is comfortable with 1.0 mm you can go for the higher size as they are much more effective and stimulates the collagen production.
A study was conducted by PMC, where 37 patients having facial scars were offered multiple sittings of dermaroller treatment and out of these 36 patients achieved a reduction in the severity of their scarring.
4. Help remove sun burns and discolorations
Collagen is the most important component which provides structure to your skin and promotes skin elasticity.
Getting sunburn in summer is common and is totally harmless. But you may feel uncomfortable to rock your favourite dress because of it. Derma roller helps you to reverse the damages caused by the sun and help with the discolouration of your skin.
Dermaroller with needle size 1.0 mm is preferred.
5. Better absorbtion
If you apply any product to your skin then derma rolling can help with the absorption as it increases the rate of absorption. Derma roller creates tiny pores on your skin and a higher per cent of the product will be able to penetrate your skin.
6. Hair Regrowth
Derma roller can not only be used for the skin but also to get healthy hair. If you are suffering from hair loss or have a type of alopecia then derma roller can help regrow your hair. It increases the absorption rate of topical solutions.
